International youth festival 2011
This year's International Youth Festival "United Games of Nations" is took place from June 13th to the 19th, 2011 in the FEZ Wuhlheide. Under the motto "Time travel - times are changing" about 120 young people from 12 countries, mostly from Europe, came together in order to participate in an exchange of views and experiences. These young people were challenged to work together in multi-national workshops to encourage cultural awareness dialogue.Students have choosen three decades of the 20 and 21st century (1900, 50ies & 60ies and today) to concentrate on, and compare and contrast the various political systems and religious situations that existed during those periods of time. Because the students come from various cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds there was a wealth of information for them to exchange.Students got to know each other while living in a camping environment at a beautiful youth center situated on a lake in Treptow-Köpenick. However, one of the highlights of the week was an International Dinner prepared by the participants to represent the foods of their respective countries.Another highlight occured on Saturday, June 18, when the young people participated in the Köpenicker summer parade and presented their final performance on stage at the Palace island in the old town of Köpenick. We were particularly pleased that we could welcome this year not only guests from our European long-term sister cities Izola (Slovenia), Olomouc (Czech Republic), Mürzzuschlag (Austria), Balatonfüzfö / Zirc (Hungary) and Subotica (Serbia), but that we also received a small delegation from the U.S. sister city, East Norriton Township.
